    Deformation of a nearly hemispherical conducting drop due to an electric field: theory and experiment

    We consider, both theoretically and experimentally, the deformation due to an electric field of a pinned nearly-hemispherical static sessile drop of an ionic fluid with a high conductivity resting on the lower substrate of a parallel plate capacitor. Using both numerical and asymptotic approaches we find solutions to the coupled electrostatic and augmented Young–Laplace equations which agree very well with the experimental results. Our asymptotic solution for the drop interface extends previous work in two ways, namely to drops that have zero-field contact angles that are not exactly π/2 and to higher order in the applied electric field, and provides useful predictive equations for the changes in the height, contact angle and pressure as functions of the zero-field contact angle, drop radius, surface tension and applied electric field. The asymptotic solution requires some numerical computations, and so a surprisingly accurate approximate analytical asymptotic solution is also obtained

    Exhaust of Underexpanded Jets from Finite Reservoirs

    We examine the response of an underexpanded jet to a depleting, finite reservoir with experiments and simulations. An open-ended shock tube facility with variable reservoir length is used to obtain images of nitrogen and helium jet structures at successive instances during the blowdown from initial pressure ratios of up to 250. The reservoir and ambient pressures are simultaneously measured to obtain the instantaneous pressure ratio. We estimate the time-scales for jet formation and reservoir depletion as a function of the specific heat ratio of the gas and the initial pressure ratio. The jet structure formation time-scale is found to become approximately independent of pressure ratio for ratios greater than 50. In the present work, no evidence of time-dependence in the Mach disk shock location is observed for rates of pressure decrease associated with isentropic blowdown of a finite reservoir while the pressure ratio is greater than 15. The shock location in the finite- reservoir jet can be calculated from an existing empirical fit to infinite-reservoir jet data evaluated at the instantaneous reservoir pressure. For pressure ratios below 15, however, the present data deviate from a compilation of data for infinite-reservoir jets. A new fit is obtained to data in the lower pressure regime. The self-similarity of the jet structure is quantified and departure from similarity is noted to begin at pressure ratios lower than about 15, approximately the same ratio which limits existing empirical fits

    Searching for sterile neutrinos in ice

    Oscillation interpretation of the results from the LSND, MiniBooNE and some other experiments requires existence of sterile neutrino with mass ∌1\sim 1 eV and mixing with the active neutrinos ∣UÎŒ0∣2∌(0.02−0.04)|U_{\mu 0}|^2 \sim (0.02 - 0.04). It has been realized some time ago that existence of such a neutrino affects significantly the fluxes of atmospheric neutrinos in the TeV range which can be tested by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. In view of the first IceCube data release we have revisited the oscillations of high energy atmospheric neutrinos in the presence of one sterile neutrino. Properties of the oscillation probabilities are studied in details for various mixing schemes both analytically and numerically. The energy spectra and angular distributions of the ΜΌ−\nu_\mu-events have been computed for the simplest Îœs−\nu_s-mass, and Îœs−ΜΌ\nu_s - \nu_\mu mixing schemes and confronted with the IceCube data. An illustrative statistical analysis of the present data shows that in the Îœs−\nu_s-mass mixing case the sterile neutrinos with parameters required by LSND/MiniBooNE can be excluded at about 3σ3\sigma level. The Îœs−ΜΌ\nu_s- \nu_\mu mixing scheme, however, can not be ruled out with currently available IceCube data.Comment: 41 pages, 16 figures. Accepted for publication in JHEP.     Vaporization and Layering of Alkanols at the Oil/Water Interface

    This study of adsorption of normal alkanols at the oil/water interface with x-ray reflectivity and tensiometry demonstrates that the liquid to gas monolayer phase transition at the hexane/water interface is thermodynamically favorable only for long-chain alkanols. As the alkanol chain length is decreased, the change in excess interfacial entropy per area decreases to zero. Systems with small values of excess interfacial entropy form multi-molecular layers at the interface instead of the monolayer formed by systems with much larger excess interfacial entropy. Substitution of n-hexane by n-hexadecane significantly alters the interfacial structure for a given alkanol surfactant, but this substitution does not change fundamentally the phase transition behavior of the monolayers. These data show that the critical alkanol carbon number, at which the change in excess interfacial entropy per area decreases to zero, is approximately six carbons larger than the number of carbons in the alkane solvent molecules.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, to be published in J.     Polymorphisms in Gag spacer peptide 1 confer varying levels of resistance to the HIV- 1maturation inhibitor bevirimat

    Background: The maturation inhibitor bevirimat (BVM) potently inhibits human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication by blocking capsid-spacer peptide 1 (CA-SP1) cleavage. Recent clinical trials demonstrated that a significant proportion of HIV-1-infected patients do not respond to BVM. A patient’s failure to respond correlated with baseline polymorphisms at SP1 residues 6-8. Results: In this study, we demonstrate that varying levels of BVM resistance are associated with point mutations at these residues. BVM susceptibility was maintained by SP1-Q6A, -Q6H and -T8A mutations. However, an SP1-V7A mutation conferred high-level BVM resistance and SP1-V7M and T8Δ mutations conferred intermediate levels of BVM resistance. Conclusions: Future exploitation of the CA-SP1 cleavage site as an antiretroviral drug target will need to overcome the baseline variability in the SP1 region of Gag.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    VLT/UVES Observations of Interstellar Molecules and Diffuse Bands in the Magellanic Clouds

    We discuss the abundances of interstellar CH, CH+, and CN in the Magellanic Clouds (MC), derived from spectra of 7 SMC and 13 LMC stars obtained (mostly) with the VLT/UVES. CH and/or CH+ are detected toward 3 SMC and 9 LMC stars; CN is detected toward 2 stars. In the MC, the CH/H2 ratio is comparable to that found for diffuse Galactic molecular clouds in some sight lines, but is lower by factors up to 10-15 in others. The abundance of CH in the MC thus appears to depend on local physical conditions -- and not just on metallicity. The observed relationships between the column density of CH and those of CN, CH+, Na I, and K I in the MC are generally consistent with the trends observed in our Galaxy. Using existing data for the rotational populations of H2, we estimate temperatures, radiation field strengths, and local hydrogen densities for the diffuse molecular gas. Densities estimated from N(CH), assuming that CH is produced via steady-state gas-phase reactions, are considerably higher; much better agreement is found by assuming that the CH is made via the (still undetermined) process(es) responsible for the observed CH+. The UVES spectra also reveal absorption from the diffuse interstellar bands at 5780, 5797, and 6284 A in the MC. On average, the three DIBs are weaker by factors of 7-9 (LMC) and about 20 (SMC), compared to those observed in Galactic sight lines with similar N(H I), and by factors of order 2-6, relative to E(B-V), N(Na I), and N(K I). The detection of several of the ``C2 DIBs'', with strengths similar to those in comparable Galactic sight lines, however, indicates that no single, uniform scaling factor (e.g., one related to metallicity) applies to all DIBs (or all sight lines) in the MC.     Welshness in British Wales: Negotiating national identity at the margins

    Popular interpretations of national identity often focus on the unifying qualities of nationhood. However, societies frequently draw hierarchical distinctions between the people and places who are ‘most national’, and those who are ‘least national’. Little attention is paid to these marginal places within the nation and the experiences of their inhabitants. This article helps to address this by analysing the ‘less Welsh’ British Wales region of Wales, a country that has traditionally possessed a hierarchical, regionally constituted nationhood. The article studies the British Wales region both ‘from above’ – considering how some areas develop as ‘less national’ – and ‘from below’, introducing empirical ethnographic work into ‘everyday Welshness’ in this area. Whilst previous work on hierarchical nationhood focuses on how hierarchies are institutionalized by the state, this article demonstrates how people at the margins of the nation actively negotiate their place in the nation. Whilst people in this area expressed a strong Welshness, they also struggled to place themselves in the nation because they had internalized their lowly place within the national hierarchy. The article demonstrates the importance of place and social class for national identity construction and draws attention to the role of power in the discursive construction of hierarchical nationhood

    VISTA Milky Way public survey

    We propose a public IR variability survey, named \Vista Variables in the VĂ­a LĂĄctea" (V V V ), of the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the mid-plane where star formation activity is high. This would take 1920 hours, covering ~ 109 point sources within an area of 520 sq deg, including 33 known globular clusters and ~ 350 open clusters. The final products will be a deep IR atlas in 5 passbands and a catalogue of ~ 106 variable point sources. These will produce a 3-D map of the surveyed region (unlike single-epoch surveys that only give 2-D maps) using well-understood primary distance indicators such as RR Lyrae stars. It will yield important information on the ages of the populations. The observations will be combined with data from MACHO, OGLE, EROS, VST, SPITZER, HST, CHANDRA, INTEGRAL, and ALMA for a complete understanding of the variable sources in the inner Milky Way. Several important implications for the history of the Milky Way, for globular cluster evolution, for the population census of the bulge and center, and for pulsation theory would follow from this survey
